How Small Businesses Are Using 3D Printing to Cut Costs

30 August 20256 min readBy KL8

3D printing used to be something you only saw in large manufacturing facilities or enthusiast garages. That has changed. Print quality has improved dramatically, material options have expanded, and the cost of getting something printed is now low enough that it makes sense for small businesses across a wide range of industries.

Replacement Parts That Are No Longer Available

This is one of the highest-value applications. If you have a piece of equipment where a plastic component has broken and the manufacturer no longer stocks the part, 3D printing is the answer.

We’ve printed cable management clips, control panel bezels, machine guards, furniture components, automotive trim pieces, and door handles — all for clients who couldn’t source the original parts.

Custom Mounting Hardware

Tradies and workshop owners need custom brackets constantly. Getting these fabricated in metal is expensive and slow. Printing them in PETG or ASA takes hours and costs a few dollars. For applications that don’t require extreme strength or heat resistance, printed brackets work excellently.

Prototyping Products

If you’re developing a product, 3D printing lets you iterate on the physical design rapidly without tooling costs. You can test fitment, check proportions, and validate your design before committing to injection moulding or CNC machining.

Material Selection Matters

PLA: Easy to print, good detail, but brittle and not UV stable. Use for indoor, non-structural parts.
PETG: Tougher than PLA, slightly flexible. Good all-rounder for practical parts.
ASA: UV and weather resistant. Use for outdoor applications or parts exposed to sunlight.
TPU: Flexible. Good for gaskets, bump stops, cable management.

Getting Parts Printed

If you don’t have a printer and just need a one-off part or small batch, we offer print services on the Central Coast. Bring us a broken part to measure, a sketch, or a 3D file — and we can usually turn it around within a day or two.
